Core Concepts

CohortA group of customers who share a common characteristic, typically when they first became customers
Cohort AgeHow many periods since a cohort started (Month 0 = first month, Month 1 = second month)
Retention RatePercentage of customers (or revenue) that remains active over time
WaterfallA breakdown showing how a metric changes through additions and subtractions

ReturnPreviously churned customers who come back
GrowthExisting customers increasing their spend
ReductionExisting customers decreasing their spend (but not to $0)
LostCustomers who had value last period but $0 this period

Metrics

Gross ChurnRevenue lost from Reduction + Lost as % of Starting
Net Revenue Retention (NRR)Ending / Starting — >100% means growth without new customers
LTVLifetime Value — total revenue from a customer over their lifetime
MRRMonthly Recurring Revenue
ARRAnnual Recurring Revenue (MRR × 12)

Data Terms

Periods as ColumnsData layout where each column is a time period (Jan, Feb, Mar as headers)
Periods as RowsData layout where each row is one observation at one time
SegmentA dimension for grouping (product, region, plan, etc.)
UIDUnique Identifier — the column that identifies individual customers
